Crochet African Flower
Materials Needed:
- Scissors
- Crochet hook
- Three different colored yarns (The tutorial uses acrylic DK weight yarn and a 4 mm hook)
Terms & Techniques Used (UK Terms):
- Slip knot
- Slip stitch
- Chain
- Double crochet
- Treble crochet
Pattern Instructions:
Center of the Flower:
- With the color chosen for the center, create a slip knot, and insert the hook.
- Chain 4.
- Instead of forming a ring, work into the first chain you made. This chain becomes the center of the flower.
- Work a treble into the first chain. The initial 4 chains represent your first treble.
- Follow with one more treble into the center.
- Chain 1, then make another pair of trebles into the center chain.
- Repeat the process of "chain 1 and two trebles into the center" two more times, resulting in six pairs of trebles, each separated by a chain.
- Join the round with a slip stitch at the top of the first pair of trebles, then cut and fasten off the yarn.
Petals of the Flower:
- Choose a second yarn color for the petals and make a slip knot on your hook.
- Join this yarn into any chain space from the previous round with a double crochet (which counts as your first treble), followed by 1 chain.
- Work another treble into the same chain space.
- Repeat the sequence of "[Chain 1, treble] twice" in each chain space around.
- Join the round with a slip stitch into the top of the first treble pair made.
- For the second round of petals, using the same petal color, work into the chain spaces again. This time, after your initial chain and treble, make six more trebles in the same space for a total of seven trebles.
- Repeat around for each chain space, ensuring you have seven trebles in each space to form clearer petals.
- Finish this section by joining with a slip stitch into the first treble, then cut and fasten off the yarn.
Background/Joining Round:
- Choose your background color yarn, make a slip knot and insert your hook.
- Join the yarn in the middle stitch of one petal (count to the fourth treble of seven in a petal).
- Work a double crochet in the middle stitch and the following three stitches.
- Work an elongated treble into the gap below from the first petal round to form the petal shape.
- Continue the pattern of [double crochet in each of the next seven stitches around the next petal, followed by an elongated treble in the gap from the first round] all the way around.
- Join the round with a slip stitch and fasten off to complete the African flower.
Border of the Flower:
- For the last round, and to give your African flower a finished look, you will create edges and corners.
- Chain 3 (counts as one treble and one chain), then make another treble into the same stitch for your corner.
- Treble in the next seven stitches to the middle stitch of the next petal where you again create a corner.
- Repeat this process all around, ensuring you have a treble in each stitch and corners in the center stitches of petals.
- Join with a slip stitch to the second chain at the beginning of the round, cut and fasten off.
Finishing:
- Weave in all ends securely to finish your African flower.
