- Pull the loop tight and slip stitch (sl st) to join the round.
Round 2:
- Chain one (ch 1).
- Make two half double crochets (hdc) in each stitch around.
- Slip stitch (sl st) to join the round. You should now have 12 stitches.
After Round 3:
- Chain one (ch 1).
- One half double crochet (hdc) in the first stitch, two hdc in the next stitch; repeat from * to * around.
- Slip stitch (sl st) to join the round. You should have 18 stitches.
Round 4:
- Chain one (ch 1).
- Make one half double crochet (hdc) in each stitch around without increasing.
- Slip stitch (sl st) to join the round.
Creating the mouth:
- Chain one (ch 1).
- Half double crochet (hdc) in the same and next six stitches.
- Chain three (ch 3), skip two stitches, and half double crochet in the next stitch. This creates the mouth.
- Continue half double crochet in each stitch around.
- Slip stitch (sl st) to join the round. You should have 16 hdc with a 3-chain space for the mouth, totaling 19 stitches.
Decrease for shaping:
- Start with a hdc decrease (hdc two together) in the first two stitches.
- One hdc in the next stitch, then a hdc decrease over the next two stitches.
- Repeat the pattern around, including over the mouth section.
- Once complete, insert the stress ball. You will have 11 hdc this round.
Further Decrease:
- Half double crochet decrease (hdc two together) all the way around.
- You should end up with six stitches.
- Slip stitch to join and then cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Finishing:
- Draw the tail through the stitches to close the opening.
- Sew on the mustache and ears.
- If using, hot glue the patch eyes in place.
Decorating:
- Attach the mustache and ears using the pre-threaded gray and black thread, sewing carefully not to pierce the stress ball inside.
- For the eyes, apply a small amount of hot glue (if using plastic eyes) and secure them in place.
