Materials:

  • Scissors (or a nail clipper)
  • Darning needle
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook
  • Leftover yellow yarn (for making the star)
  • Approximately 5g of green yarn (for the tree)
  • Some leftover brown yarn (for the tree trunk)

Pattern:

Tree Body:

  • Make a slip knot and chain 3.
  • Skip the first chain, begin work in the second chain, and do half double crochet (HDC) until the end of the row. (First row will have 2 stitches)
  • Chain 1, turn your work. For the second row, do an HDC increase in each stitch until the end of the row (2 HDC in each stitch).
  • Chain 1, turn your work. For the third row, do HDC normally (no increases).

For rows 4-7:

  • Chain 1, turn your work. Do HDC in all but the last stitch. In the last stitch, do an HDC increase. Repeat this step for each of these rows.

For rows 8-9:

  • At the start and end of the row, do an HDC increase, HDC normally between the increases.

In the 10th row:

  • Chain 1, turn your work, and do HDC normally across the row without increases.

For rows 11-12:

  • Repeat the steps for rows 8-9.

In the 13th row:

  • Chain 1, turn your work, and HDC normally across the row without increases.

For rows 14-15:

  • Repeat the increase pattern (as in rows 8-9) at the start and end of the row.

For the 16th row:

  • Chain 1, turn your work, and HDC normally across the entire row.
  • Fasten off the yarn, leaving a tail for attaching parts later.

Tree Trunk:

  • Identify and mark the center 6 stitches at the bottom row of your tree.
  • Attach the brown yarn to the right-most marked stitch.
  • Chain 1 and do 6 HDC across the marked stitches.
  • Chain 1, turn your work, and do two more rows of 6 HDC (for a total of 3 rows for the trunk).
  • Fasten off the yarn, leaving a tail.

Star:

  • Using the yellow yarn, make a magic ring.
  • Chain 1 and make 10 single crochets into the ring. Close the ring tightly.

For each point of the star:

  • Chain 4, skip the first chain, slip stitch in the second chain, single crochet in the next chain, and half double crochet in the last chain. Skip two stitches on the ring, slip stitch into the next stitch. Repeat this process around to create five points.
  • Fasten off the yarn, leaving a long tail for attaching to the tree.

Finishing Touches:

  • Use the tail from the star to attach it to the top of the tree.
  • Weave in all remaining ends with your darning needle.
  • Optionally, you can add a loop for hanging if you're using it as an ornament or keychain.
