Whether you're going for casual cool or a touch of boho flair, each design is a chance to show off your style in the most creative way. Crochet tops aren’t just clothes—they’re a vibe, a mood, and a mini celebration of your crafty side.

Materials

  • 100% cotton yarn (or any yarn of your choice)
  • 3 mm crochet hook
  • Contrasting yarn for markers (e.g., orange)

Abbreviations

  • Ch: Chain
  • Sc: Single crochet
  • Dc: Double crochet

Creating the Base (Width of the Top)

Crochet Simple Top 1

Foundation Chain

  • Make a slip knot.

Chain 90 stitches (suitable for size S/M).

  • For larger sizes (L/XL), chain around 110.
  • For smaller sizes, subtract chains in multiples of 5 (e.g., 85, 80, 75).
  • Check the width against a well-fitting t-shirt for accuracy.

Row 2 (First Row of Pattern)

  • Ch 3 (counts as first Dc).
  • Skip 3 chains, make 1 Dc in the 4th chain from the hook.
  • Make 1 Dc in each of the next 2 chains (3 Dc total).
  • Ch 2, skip 2 stitches.
  • Make 3 Dc (1 in each of the next 3 stitches).

Repeat: Ch 2, skip 2, 3 Dc across the row.

  • Each repeat section uses 5 stitches.

Row 3 and Onward

  • Ch 3 at the end of the row (counts as Dc), turn your work.
  • Ch 2.
  • In each Ch-2 space from the previous row, make 3 Dc.
  • Ch 2 between each set of 3 Dc.
  • Repeat across the row.
  • End with 1 Dc in the top of the turning Ch-3.
  • Continue repeating this pattern for the desired length.

For reference, 42 rows were made in the video.

Shaping the Neckline and Shoulders

Marking the Neckline

  • Fold the rectangle in half lengthwise to find the center.
  • From the edge, count 8 “packages” (sets of 3 Dc + Ch 2).
  • In the 9th package, mark the Ch-2 space with contrasting yarn.
  • Repeat on the opposite side.

First Shoulder Section

  • Ch 3 and turn your work.
  • Complete the first package by making 2 more Dc.
  • Continue in pattern until reaching the marker.
  • The shoulder should contain 8 packages in total.

Continue the Shoulder

  • Ch 3 and turn.
  • Continue the established pattern across shoulder stitches only.
  • Work 18 rows for this shoulder section.

Second Shoulder Section

  • Repeat the same steps for the opposite side.
  • Make sure the second shoulder also has 8 packages and 18 rows.

Rejoining the Front and Back

Working Across the First Shoulder

  • Ch 3 and turn your work.
  • Complete the package with 2 more Dc.
  • Continue pattern across the shoulder section.

Creating the Neckline Chain

  • After the last 3 Dc group on the shoulder, Ch 2.
  • Chain across the neckline gap (e.g., 48 chains for the 90-stitch base).
  • Ensure chain count matches the number of skipped stitches.

Connecting to the Second Shoulder

  • Lay your work flat to avoid twisting.
  • Dc into the top of the Ch-3 on the second shoulder.

Crocheting Across Second Shoulder

  • Continue in pattern across the second shoulder section.

Building the Body

  • Ch 3 and turn.
  • Continue the pattern across the entire row, including into the neckline chain.
  • When working into the neckline chain, skip 2 chain stitches before making 3 Dc.
  • Repeat rows until desired front and back length is achieved.
  • You may keep both sides equal or make the back slightly longer.

Adding the Sleeves

Marking Armholes

  • Fold the top as if it’s being worn.
  • Use stitch markers or yarn to mark the desired armhole width on both sides.
  • Ensure symmetry for clean sleeve shaping.

Suggested armhole: 48 stitches wide.

Crocheting the Sleeves

  • Attach yarn at the armhole marker.
  • Ch 5 (3 for Dc + 2 for spacing).
  • Work in pattern (3 Dc in Ch-2 space, Ch 2) in rows along the armhole opening.
  • Continue for the desired number of sleeve rows.

Approximately 8 rows are recommended.

  • Repeat on the second armhole.

Finishing Touches

Joining the Sides

  • Fold the top in half lengthwise, aligning sides neatly.

Join the sides:

  • Option 1: Sew with a yarn needle.

Option 2: Use slip stitch with hook.

  • Insert hook through both sides of each stitch.
  • Yarn over and pull through all loops.
  • Continue down to the bottom.

Repeat for the other side.

Weaving in Ends

  • Use a yarn needle to weave in all loose ends neatly.
