This step-by-step tutorial will guide you through crocheting the puff sleeves for a crop sweater or shrug, offering a simple yet elegant way to add volume and flair to your outfit. The pattern is beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for crocheters looking to try something new.
Crochet Puff Sleeves

Using a combination of Single Crochet (SC) and Double Crochet (DC), the puff sleeve effect is achieved by increasing and decreasing stitches to form a beautiful, poofy texture. This versatile pattern can be easily customized to fit your desired sleeve length or puffiness, making it perfect for both cozy sweaters and trendy shrugs.
The First Row (Increasing for Puff)
- Starting Chain: After joining your cuff, create a new row by adding one chain loop.
- Single Crochet Row: Work a Single Crochet (SC) stitch along the entire edge of the cuff.
Increasing: Make roughly two times the number of SC stitches as the rows you have on your cuff.
- Joining: Join with a Slip Stitch (SS) into the first SC of the row.

Main Sleeve Body (Double Crochet Rows)
- Starting Chain: Chain three loops to begin the first DC row (counts as first DC).
- Double Crochet: Work one Double Crochet (DC) in each SC from the previous row.
- Joining: Join the row with a Slip Stitch (SS) into the top of the initial chain-3.
- Continuing Rows: Repeat DC rows (Chain 3, DC in each stitch,
- Join with SS) for a set number of rows to form the main puff section.
Example: Creator did this for eight rows without increasing or decreasing.

Decreasing for Shoulder Shaping
- Decrease Pattern: Alternate between a Decrease Row and a Normal Row until sleeve is round.

How to Do a DC Decrease (DC Dec):
- Yarn over, insert hook into first stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through two loops.
- Yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through two loops.
- Yarn over, pull through the three remaining loops on the hook.
Completing the Sleeve: Continue the alternating rows until sleeve fits your arm or shoulder, then crochet normal DC rows until it reaches just under the arms.
