Materials

  • Brim: Red Heart Super Saver in Aaron (G/4mm hook)
  • Body: Red Heart Super Saver in Claret (J/6mm hook)
  • Other: Yarn needle, scissors, optional fur or yarn pom-pom

The Brim (Color Aaron, G/4mm Hook)

  • Chain 20.
  • Row 1: HDC in second back bump and across (19 HDC).
  • Row 2: Chain 1, turn. HDC across (19 HDC).

Crochet Christmas Hat 1

  • Continue a 2-row repeat pattern: one cable row followed by one solid HDC row.
  • Alternate between Front Post Treble Crochet (FPTC) and Front Post Double Treble (FPDTR) for over and under cables.
  • Keep alternating Row 5 and Row 7 cable styles until the brim measures about 20.5 inches, ending on an odd row.

Bobble Edging (Color Aaron, J/6mm Hook)

  • Chain 1 and switch to a J hook.
  • SC in the first side space.
  • Work a 5-wrap Bobble in the same space.
  • SC in the next side space, then another Bobble.
  • Repeat SC and Bobble to the end, ending with a Bobble.
  • Fasten off the Aaron yarn.

Crochet Christmas Hat 3

Hat Body/Crown (Color Claret, J/6mm Hook)

  • Attach Claret yarn at the first SC of the bobble row.
  • Chain 2 and work Linked Double Crochet (LDC) across, totaling 66 stitches.
  • Rows 2–6: Chain 2, turn, LDC in each stitch across.

Rows 7–22: Alternate between decrease rows and straight rows following the pattern:

  • Row 7: LDC Dec, 9 LDC (end with 60 stitches).
  • Row 9: LDC Dec, 8 LDC (54 stitches).
  • Continue the same decrease logic down to Row 21 (ending with 18 stitches).
  • Rows 23–26: Switch to DC.
  • Row 23: DC Decrease in every stitch.
  • Row 24: DC in every stitch.
  • Row 25: DC Decrease in every stitch.
  • Row 26: DC in every stitch.

Finishing Details

Crochet Christmas Hat 4

  • Top Bobble Row (Optional): Attach Aaron yarn, SC in first stitch, 5-wrap Bobble in same stitch, SC in next.
  • Repeat the sequence until complete, then cinch the top shut.
  • Bottom Bobble Row and Edging: Attach Aaron yarn to the brim’s opposite side.
  • Alternate SC and Bobble to match the first side’s count, then slip stitch around for a neat edge.
  • Seaming: Turn the hat inside out, sew the side edges together, and weave in all ends.
  • Attach a pom-pom to the tip of the hat for the final touch.
