This open back crochet sweater is stylish, modern, and fun to create. Worked mostly in half double crochet stitches, the sweater features a flat panel construction, comfy sleeves, and an elegant open back twist that offers a chic finish.

Crochet Sweater With Open Back Free Easy Pattern

Designed with an adjustable back chain and front ties, this versatile piece can be customized to fit your preferred width and length. Whether you’re looking for a casual everyday layer or a standout statement top, this sweater offers a flattering fit and beautiful texture that pairs effortlessly with any outfit.

Materials

  • 4 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn of choice
  • Tapestry needle for weaving

Front Panel

  • Chain to shoulder width, example 75 chains.
  • Skip 2 chains, work HDC in back loop across.
  • Work 38 rows of HDC in back loop.

Back Panels

  • Without cutting yarn, chain 2 and turn.
  • Work 20 HDC in back loop.
  • Continue for 30 rows.
  • Cut yarn and attach to remaining stitches.
  • Work second strap repeating 30 rows of 20 HDC.

Joining the Back

  • Twist both straps.
  • Chain to fill center, example 33 chains.
  • Slip stitch to connect chain to opposite strap.
  • Work HDC across width including straps and chain.
  • Complete 8 rows to match front.

Seaming and Armholes

  • Count 15 rows from top and mark.
  • Slip stitch side seam from bottom to marker.
  • Fasten off.

Sleeves

  • Attach yarn at marker and chain 80.
  • Skip 2 chains and HDC across.
  • Slip stitch to sweater body.
  • Next row chain 1, work one HDC then chain 1 skip next, repeat.
  • Next row chain 2, HDC across.
  • Continue repeating until sleeve length.
  • Slip stitch sides to close sleeve.

Waistband

  • Attach yarn at seam and chain 11.
  • Skip first and SC down chain.
  • Slip stitch next two loops on body.
  • Turn and work back loop SC across.
  • Continue repeating around.
  • Slip stitch ends to join.

Cuff Edging

  • Attach yarn, chain 2 and DC around.
  • Work one decrease round using FPDC and BPDC.
  • Work ribbing with FPDC and BPDC for three rounds.
  • Slip stitch and fasten.

Neck and Front Ties

  • On front skip top 2 rows.
  • Work two HDC in each stitch across next four rows.
  • Continue to desired length.
  • Fasten and tie bow.
