This Crochet Hexagon Cardigan pattern is perfect for anyone who loves a creative yet simple project. Using two hexagons, you’ll crochet a cardigan that’s both chic and comfortable.

It uses ombre yarn for a soft color transition and can easily be adjusted for your preferred size and sleeve length. Perfect for layering, this cardigan combines comfort and elegance, making it a must-have in your handmade wardrobe. Whether you prefer bold colors or soft pastels, this design allows endless creativity in yarn choice.

Materials

  • Yarn: YarnArt Flowers (55% Cotton, 45% Polyacryl, 1000m/250g cake), two identical cakes for ombre effect
  • Hook: 3 mm or size needed for correct tension
  • Tools: Measuring tape, scissors, yarn needle

Sizing: Crochet until the piece measures from the back of your neck to your desired sleeve length. The width should be about half your bust size.

The Hexagon

  • Make a slip knot and chain 4.
  • Slip stitch to form a ring.
  • Chain 3 (counts as first dc), make 2 dc in the center ring.
  • Chain 3 for the corner.

Crochet Hexagon Cardigan 1

  • Make 3 dc into the center ring for the next side.
  • Repeat the corner and side pattern until you have 6 sides.
  • Chain 3 and slip stitch to the third chain of the starting chain.

Lacy Pattern (Arch Row)

  • Chain 4, turn your work.
  • Make 1 dc in the corner space, chain 3, and make 1 dc in the same space.
  • Chain 1, dc in the first dc of the side, chain 1, skip one, dc in the last dc.
  • Chain 1, make (1 dc, chain 3, 1 dc) in the corner.
  • Repeat around and slip stitch to finish.

Solid Double Crochet Rows

  • Chain 3 and turn your work.
  • Make 1 dc in each dc and chain space along the side.
  • In each corner, make (2 dc, chain 2, 2 dc).
  • Continue around and slip stitch to finish.
  • Repeat this solid dc row two more times.

4-Row Repeat

  • Row 1: Lacy Row
  • Rows 2–4: Solid Double Crochet Rows
  • Repeat this 4-row pattern until the piece reaches your desired sleeve length.

Sleeve Shaping and Seam

  • Chain 1 and turn your work.
  • Use invisible decreases (insert hook into front loops of two stitches, yarn over, pull through, yarn over, pull through both loops).
  • Work decreases along the sleeve section until the underarm corner.
  • Join corners with a decrease to close the underarm seam.
  • Continue single crochet decreases around and slip stitch to finish.

  • Fasten off and cut the yarn.

Shoulder Seam

  • Fold the hexagon in half, aligning the neck corner and sleeve end.
  • Cut yarn three times the seam length and thread it through a yarn needle.
  • Use mattress stitch to sew the edges together from sleeve to neckline.

Body Extension

  • Attach yarn at the neckline corner.
  • Continue the 4-row repeat pattern across the three open sides, working back and forth.
  • Keep the corner increases (2 dc, chain 2, 2 dc) at the two body corners.
  • Add rows until the body reaches the desired length.
  • Fasten off.

Second Hexagon and Final Assembly

  • Repeat the entire pattern for the second hexagon.
  • Place both pieces side by side and align the back edges.
  • Sew the back seam using the mattress stitch.
  • Weave in all yarn ends.
